Voice call issues

Voice calls in Cloa run over a real-time audio connection. Most issues come from network conditions or microphone permissions. The sections below cover the common cases and how to resolve them.

When a voice call won't connect

A call that fails to start is almost always a network issue.

  1. Confirm your device has a working internet connection by loading any website or app.
  2. Force-close the Cloa app and reopen it.
  3. Start the call again.

If the call still won't connect, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular to rule out a single-network problem.

When Cloa doesn't respond during a call

If Cloa stays silent after you speak, the microphone permission is the most likely cause.

  1. Open your device settings and confirm Cloa has microphone access.
    • On iOS, go to Settings, select Cloa, and turn on Microphone.
    • On Android, go to Settings, select Apps, select Cloa, open Permissions, and allow Microphone.
  2. Return to the call and check the soundwave visualizer on the call screen. It should react in real time as you speak.
  3. If the visualizer stays flat, end the call, reopen the app, and start a new call.

A flat visualizer with permissions enabled usually indicates the microphone is being held by another app. Close other apps that may be using audio, such as voice memos or video calls.

When audio quality is poor

Choppy audio, dropouts, or robotic playback point to bandwidth or signal problems.

  1. Switch to Wi-Fi if you're on cellular, or move to an area with stronger cellular signal.
  2. Close other apps that consume bandwidth, such as video streaming or large downloads.
  3. Use headphones if possible. A wired or Bluetooth headset reduces echo and improves microphone clarity.

When barge-in doesn't work

Cloa supports barge-in, which lets you interrupt the response by speaking. If your interruption isn't registering:

  1. Speak more clearly or slightly louder so the microphone picks up the start of your sentence.
  2. Move to a quieter environment. Background noise can mask the start of speech.
  3. Confirm the soundwave visualizer reacts when you speak. If it doesn't, follow the microphone steps above.

When a call ends unexpectedly

Calls that drop mid-conversation are usually caused by a brief loss of internet connectivity.

  1. Start a new call and continue where you left off.
  2. If calls drop repeatedly, force-close and reopen the app.
  3. Switch networks (Wi-Fi to cellular, or vice versa) to test whether the issue is tied to one connection.
